Our Founder
While doing her work as Chief Probation Officer of Fayette County, founder Doris Benefiel, saw a need for support services for victims of sexual assault and their families. After exploring possibilities, a core group of eight women from various organizations and professions visited the Illinois Coalition Against Sexual Assault (ICASA) Office in Springfield. SAFE was incorporated in January 1986 as a nonprofit focusing on sexual crisis intervention in Vandalia, IL. Following Doris' lead, we now put our many, many years of experience to work, offering sexual assault help to victims every day. Contact us today to discuss your needs.
Mission Statement
SAFE's mission is to alleviate sexual violence and help sexual victims and their families recover and reclaim their lives. As an organization, we will work to overcome obstacles by educating society at large about the causes and consequences of sexual violence. SAFE will assist with healing by creating a support system for victims and their families consisting of medical and legal advocacy, counseling, and education.
