Volunteer Information

If you have been sexually assaulted, raped, or think you were given a drug and assaulted by someone take the following steps to protect yourself:

  • Get to a safe place and call the police or our hotline – 1-800-625-1414.
  • DO NOT CHANGE YOUR CLOTHES, TAKE A BATHE OR SHOWER, BRUSH YOUR TEETH, EAT, DRINK, SMOKE OR URINATE.
Your clothes and body may provide valuable evidence in
         catching and prosecuting the perpetrator.
  • Get immediate medical attention for possible injuries and pregnancy concerns.  Take all medications and keep all follow-up appointments to ensure you stay healthy.

24 Hour Crisis Hotline - 1-800-625-1414

What Can You Expect at the Hospital?

  • You will undergo a thorough medical examination to check for injuries or other medical complications that require treatment or care due to the sexual assault.
  • Options for emergency contraception will also be explained.
  • Evidence will be collected that will be needed in the legal system to bring the perpetrator to trial.
  • Emergency room personnel will also notify SAFE that a sexual assault victim has arrived and a Medical Advocate will arrive at the hospital as soon as possible.

Advocacy

What is a “Medical Advocate” and Why Do You Need One?
  • The Medical Advocate provides support for you as you go through the medical process.
  •  If you consent, the advocate will stay with you during the entire medical exam and evidence collection process.
  • She is trained to understand the entire medical process and can explain all of your options so that you can make informed choices.
  • The advocate represents your interests and ensures that your rights are protected under the law.  During a time in your life when you are very upset, angry and possibly feeling very overwhelmed, a medical advocate can be your primary support.

  What is a “Legal Advocate”?
  • A Legal Advocate is trained to provide support for you throughout the entire criminal justice process.
  • The advocate will stay in contact with you, providing support and encouragement as the legal process continues.
  • The responsibilities of the advocate are based on the belief that you have the right to justice and maximum participation in the preparation of your case.
  • An advocate will:
    • Provide information on the progress of the police investigation, court process and court dates
    • Provide ongoing contact with police and prosecutors to ensure that you are kept informed of progress with the legal process
    • Communicate your needs to the police and state attorney
    • Assist with filing for victim compensation, transportation to court appearances, and relocation
    • Provide support concerning problems with employers, landlords, housing issues and school matters
    •  Provide referrals for counseling within SAFE
    • Provide support and information for family members and significant others
    • Assist in obtaining civil no contact orders when appropriate

All advocate services are free of charge.
